SAA / LMA Model Airshow

Strathaven Airfield in central Scotland was the venue for the joint SAA / LMA Model Airshow. There was a mixed forecast for the weekend but as it turned out, Saturday was largely dry with light winds. Winds were stronger on Sunday until in the early afternoon the rain came through calling an early halt to the show.
There was a wide range of different models from every genre and era ably displayed by LMA and SAA regulars.
I had the Pilot Edge out once again and had a number of 3D flights. Highlight for me was a three way slot with my mates Chris Currie and Simon McNeil. We each flew 100 cc size models and made a pretty reasonable stab at an impromptu synchronised aerobatic display. We did a synchronised three at once take off (hairy!) and then followed each other through a range of different 3D manoeuvres including long knife edge passes up the crowd line and three in a row prop hanging etc. ...great fun, could even be half decent if we actually practised something!
Apart from that side of aerobatics, Steven Nicol and Richard Copeland did contrasting displays with great 3D from Steven and smooth scale Pitts style aeros from Richard. Richard also had his recently re engined Panther jet with a new Jetcentral Rhino. This replaced a Jetcat 160 and really added muscle and grunt to this impressive Airworld scale model. Andy Johnstone did a great slot with his turbine powered glider showing just how far this side of the modelling genre has come with turbine powered glider aeros.
There was a large Yak jet and a desert camouflage A10 as well as many sport jets. The warbird scene was well catered for by a range of lovely WW2 fighters and bombers. Keith Mitchell had a lovely inline twin Mustang and there was a Dauntless, FW 190 and many others. Other regulars included the big Bleriot, large EE Lightning jet, a Canberra and the usual assortment of Cubs, Stearmans, Chipmonks et all! I am sure I have missed out lots, but the photos should give a flavour of the event. This is a fairly local show for me for a change and I took advantage by staying with a relative with a warm, clean bed, football on the telly and a hot shower rather than roughing it under canvas in the rain!
